Froedtert South is currently seeking a Director of Purchasing who will be responsible for the overall direction and leadership related to the operational, financial, and personnel activities within the Purchasing Department.  This position is also responsible for the overall supply chain, procurement, acquisition and distribution of materials, equipment, and services, by maintaining the supply inventory in a cost efficient and timely manner.  The Director of Purchasing will serve as a facilitator, leader and resource to the management team and physicians in matters related to purchasing procedures, expense reduction initiatives, value analysis and contract negotiations for purchasing supplies, services, and equipment.  This position develops and maintains collaborative relationships with clinical, administrative, and the system’s staff employees to ensure effective, results-oriented project outcomes and implementation of established supply chain management best practices.  This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer of the system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that purchasing strategies and processes are in place to meet business objectives and operational needs in terms of price, quality, and delivery targets
  • Responsible for managing relationships and negotiating with key suppliers at a senior and strategic level
  • Negotiate contract terms with key suppliers to ensure value for money, quality standards and delivery terms with technical and operational input from stakeholders if appropriate
    • Craft negotiation strategies and close deals with optimal terms
    • Forecast price and market trends to identify changes of balance in buyer/supplier power
  • Seek and partner with reliable vendors and suppliers
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a supplier relationship and evaluation process to measure effective supplier performance and compliance
  • Prepare the annual Purchasing budget and aid in the forecasting of Capital Expenditure proposals
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance
  • Work collaboratively, negotiate and engage with key stakeholders to facilitate delivery and compliance with the purchasing strategy
  • Communicate with stakeholders the impact of market change and potential effects on supply
  • Recommend solutions without compromising quality or service while optimizing cost
  • Provide overall leadership to Purchasing Department staff
    • Coach, mentor and develop staff and manage a high performing team that delivers continuous improvement, added value and cost reductions
    • Set department objectives and monitor ongoing progress and performance
    • Responsible for developing the appropriate organizational structure within the Purchasing Department, resource plans and culture to support the system’s objectives
    • Provide leadership, coordination, and coaching to the team, ensuring they are well trained; therefore, enabling them to achieve the operational and financial metrics within their areas of responsibility and succeed in their roles
    • Work with the Purchasing team to translate strategy into specific annual performance goals and departmental objectives including KPIs

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A thorough working knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, principles and practices of professional purchasing is required
  • Strong client service skills with ability to work collaboratively with organizational teams and outside vendors
    • Proven leadership and management skills with the ability to optimize team performance and development
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to allow for communicating effectively with all levels of employees both verbally and in writing
    • Skill in writing concise, logical, analytical reports and notes to justify purchasing and procurement related recommendations and decisions
  • Managerial skills necessary to plan, organize, direct and effectively delegate responsibilities to qualified subordinates
  • Confident negotiator with strong negotiation skills and the ability to understand contractual terms & conditions and to negotiate terms that are favorable to the system
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
  • Excellent MS Office skills (MS Excel, MS, Word, MS PowerPoint)
    • Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables
  • Ability to develop and implement action plans to address unique and unusual issues within the Purchasing Department and related disciplines
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Strong Time Management skills and self-management skills along with an ability to work under pressure
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks, with awareness of deadlines
  • Ability to identify processes needing improvement, and the confidence to recommend improvements to Senior Leadership


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Production/Operations Management, Engineering, Healthcare Administration, or a related degree is required
    • Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) preferred
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive management experience in Purchasing & Sourcing in a mid to large size organization
    • Purchasing & Sourcing experience within a healthcare setting is preferred #cb
